Alone, frightened and grieving, the apostles were in hiding when the Risen Christ appeared to them. According to the Scriptures, "Shalom" was the first word of the Risen Christ to his apostles. Jesus is seen in this sculpture as smiling in quiet, gentle triumph at being reunited with his friends. With the word "Shalom," Jesus is saying, "Don't be frightened for I am here with you now."
